Welcome Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  September:
13 Community Day
25 Early Dismissal

 Art Adventures
Art Adventure dates and permission slips will be coming out in the near future.  We will begin Art Adventures starting in October with 4th and 5th grade students.  Thank you for your patience as I make adjustments to my schedule this year.

Mystery Artist/Art Fun Board
This year I am taking on a new approach to the Mystery Artist Board.  Instead of having student be art detectives each month to discover the secret artist, I will be rotating activities on the art board.  For the month of September we are having a coloring contest to get ourselves warmed up.  The is a specific coloring page in the Art Room students may take to participate.  A top coloring picture will be selected at the end of the month for each grade level, (3rd-5th), and those students will select a prize from my prize box.

Weekly Activities in the Art Room:

Kindergarten- The Oops
Students will begin learning about one of the tough parts of being an artist--how to cope with a mistake.  We will begin by reading the story, The Oops  by Barney Saltzberg.  As we read, we will discuss all kind of mistakes that have happen to them as unknowing artists and potential mistakes they will make as current artists.  Students will then get a piece of paper with an 'Oops' already on it.  Student will then have the challenge of the concept, "If you make a mistake, work with it…"
1st Grade- Wild Thing Creatures
Students will begin their first project by reviewing the basic form of the body while using shapes to create their own Wild Thing Creature.  We will begin the lesson by reading the story, Where the Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak.  Will will use his creative images to inspire our Wild Thing Creatures

2nd Grade -The Dot
Students will begin creating dots on a piece of 11x17 paper.  They will make their dots as colorful or as large as they like.  We will then read the story, The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds.  Students will then take a second look at their dots.  Like the story, students will learn to evolve and transform their dots into an object or image.  We will discuss the challenges of thinking creatively to overcome challenges.

3rd Grade Kaleidoscope Designs
Students will be using their names or a word of their choice to create a radial design.  Students will work with lines, patterns, repetition, color to develop their design.

4th Grade- Picasso Portraits
We will begin learning about the Cubist Artist, Pablo Picasso.  We will create our own self portraits using the Cubist style.  We will begin with pencil and finish off  our creations with oil pastels.

5th Grade- Roll and Draw Impromptu Design and American Gothic
Next week we will be completing our Roll and Draw Impromptu design.  We began this project with the idea of overcoming a creative block and playing with chance.  Next we will get busy studying the famous painting, American Gothic, by Grant Wood.  We will discuss the social aspect of the painting as well as the artistic layering of art elements and principles.
