Happy Labor Day!

1st Grade: Name Tags and Wild Thing Monsters
As an introduction into the Art Room, students will create name tags to learn about directions in folding paper and seeing their creativity in decorating their names independently. Then we will begin learning about the illustrator Maurice Sendak and his book Where the Wild Things Are.

2nd Grade: The Dot
Students will come into class and create dots. Then we will learn about Peter H. Reynolds's story The Dot and how to create a master piece out of a mistake.

3rd Grade: Defining 'Art' and Kaleidoscope Names
Students will or have written one word that they would use to define Art. We will use this word and enter it into www.wordle.net to create a unique class collage of text.
Following this activity, we will begin folding large squares of paper to begin our Kaleidoscope designs.

4th Grade: Picasso Portraits
Students will begin their until on Picasso Portraits by experimenting on a website inspired by a combination of Mr. Potato Head and Picasso's Cubism, www.picassohead.com.
Following this activity we will learn more about Pablo Picasso the artist and his Cubist style.

5th Grade: American Gothic Parodies
To begin this unit, students will start out with a creative writing exercise based on the observation of Grant Wood's Painting, American Gothic. Then students will learn more about Grant Wood, his American Regionalist style and how to create their own parody.

1. Born August 21, 1961 this marine biology teacher sketched a popular square cartoon in 1984.
2. In 1987, he left teaching to pursue a dream career in animation.
3. While attending animation school at the California Institute of the Arts, he earned a job on a children's television show called Mother Goose and Grimes.
4. This energetic and optimistic sea creature debuted in July 1999 on Nickelodeon.
