March 2-6, 2009

March Celebrates the ARTs!!!!!!!!

March 2nd Happy Casmir Pulaski Day!
March 3rd This Tuesday will be a make-up day for February Art Adventures
March 16th Deadline for the 'Doodle for Google' contest for 3rd-5th grades

1st Grade: Modern Mona Lisa-We're busy finishing up sketching that fancy gal and trying to figure out what she'd like to do if she was in the future with us!

2nd Grade: Kandinsky Colors- We are learning about the artist, Wassily Kandinsky and his style of art called Abstract Art. Our focus this week is neutral colors and texture!

3rd Grade: Matisse Goldfish- We will be studying the artist, Henri Matisse. We will begin identifying and outlining warm and cool colors.

4th Grade: Guatemalan Weaving- We are learning to 'warp our looms' and the basic weaving technique of tabby! T-A-B-B-Y!!!

5th Grade<: 1 point perspective- We are busy completing our one point perspective projects and learning about the artist Leonardo da Vinci for our next project- Self portraits!!!!

Art Folder Assignment - This assignment will begin Art Folders for Trimester 3

ART FOLDER 16

A still life is a painting or drawing of a group of objects created by the artist according to a theme. A still life is usually set indoors and contains at least one man-made object. For example, the table on which the group of objects are arranged or in a floral still life the vase holding the flowers.

Your assignment is to select 3 objects, arrange them into a composition, and create a still life drawing. Your still life should include textures and details...shading is encouraged.

February 25, 2009  Art Adventures

1st Grade:  Modern Mona Lisa-  We are studying Leonardo da Vinci and the Mona Lisa. We are busy sketching her face.

2nd Grade:  Kandinsky Colors- We are focusing on secondary colors and organic shapes.

3rd Grade:  Matisse Goldfish-  We are working on Henri Matisse's artwork, Goldfish.  We are busy sketching our backgrounds and foregrounds.

4th Grade:  Guatemalan Weaving-We are learning to weave like those of the Guatemalan culture.  We are working on warping our looms.

5th Grade:  One point perspective- We are finishing up our one point perspective words.

Art Folder-  We are finishing the trimester with Art Folder #15.

1st Grade: Modern Mona Lisa's- We are learning about the artist, Leonardo Da Vinci. We are begining to sketch Mona Lisa's face.

2nd Grade: Kandinsky Colors- We are learning about the artist, Wassily Kandinsky and his style of art called Abstract Art. We will also be studying the color wheel involving primary, secondary and neutral colors.

3rd Grade: Matisse Goldfish- We will be studying the artist, Henri Matisse. We will begin sketching our own Goldfish paintings.

4th Grade: Aboriginal Art and Guatemalan Weaving- We are putting the finishing touches on our Aboriginal Paintings and will be learning about Guatemala and the art of their culture.

5th Grade<: 1 point perspective- We are turning our block letters into one point perspective and laying out the design of our backgrounds.

Directions: Answer the questions below in at least 3 complete sentences.

One of the world's most famous paintings is the Mona Lisa by the versatile Italian artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci. Her mysterious half smile has intrigued viewers for genterations. Some believe she is Lisa La Gioconda, a banker's wife. The artist was so attached to this work that he kept it all his life.

Who's smile would you like to preserve in a portrait? Why?

1st Grade: Action Jackson Painting- We are busy completing our Action Jackson Paintings. Next up is Modern Mona Lisa! Look out Leonardo, here we come!

5th Grade<: 1 point perspective- We are beginning to study one point perspective using block letters.

Art Folder Assignment

ART FOLDER 14

Directions: Your assignment is to select a photograph, (newspaper, magazine, unwanted photo, etc.) and turn it into a Cubist composition. Using scissors, cut the photograph into pieces, (be careful not to make them too small!). Once you have cut the photograph into pieces, rearrange the pieces and paste the picture together in a new order.
!!!!Please ask the owner of the picture before you cut it out!!!!!


Cubism is a style of art in which the artist breaks the rules of realistic art by using flat shapes and showing more than one perspective (point of view).
Collage is the art technique of pasting a variety of materials to a background. Pablo Picasso used the technique over eighty years ago.


5th Grade Art Adventures

The 5th grade activity will be Charcoal Drawing. Students will have the opportunity to work with various types of charcoal and art tools to create still life drawings. Students who would like to participate will need to pay a $5.00 lab fee. The lab fee will cover the costs of materials students will be using during the Art Adventure activity. Permission slips are due on Friday, Feb. 6th.
