Mystery Artist Clues for September: Eric Carle
October Mystery Artist : 
1. He was born in France on Feb. 25, 1841. At age 13 he started his career in art by painting on china in a porcelain factory in Paris.  He later went to an art school to study painting.
2. This French Impressionist chose to paint themes from everyday life: that of the joy of living and of entertainment, lunches and open-air cafes.  He once said, "Why shouldn't art be pretty? There is enough unpleasant things in the world."
3. During the last 20 years of his life, he was unable to move his hands freely due to arthritis.  However, he continued to paint by using a brush strapped to his arm.
4. An outstanding example of his talent as a portraitist can be seen in the painting, Madame Charpentier and her Children, 1878.  (It is displayed in class.)
  

1st Grade:  Nez Perce' Woven Bags
     Students will learn about the Native American culture.  Students will learn about how they created woven bags from the environment around them.  Students will create their own paper woven bag, decorate it with symbols, and stuff them with fruits and veggies.

2nd Grade: Sunday Afternoon in the Park
     Students will be using dots again to create an entire painting focusing on the style of Pointillism.   This week we will begin adding color to our own Sunday Afternoons based on George Seurat's painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

3rd Grade:  Kaleidoscope Designs and Japanese Landscapes
      Students will be putting on their colorful final touches to their Kaleidoscope projects.  Students will them begin prepping their paper for Japanese Landscapes.  

4th Grade: Cubist Portraits
     We continue learning about the artist, Pablo Picasso and his style of Cubism.  Students will begin creating their very own Cubist Portraits.  We will focus on organic and geometric shapes to create our portraits and complementary colors to add color to our projects.


5th Grade:  American Gothic Parodies
    We have begun studying the artist, Grant Wood and his famous American Gothic painting.  We will focus on the Art Elements and Principles to begin sketching our own parodies of this famous artwork.

Art Adventures

Permissions Slip

Dear Prairieview Students and Parents,

Art Adventures is back!! Art Adventures will meet on Wednesdays from 2:30-3:45 pm in the Prairieview Art Room. Each month students will explore a new art technique and various art materials. The goal of Art Adventures is to give students interested in Art an extra opportunity to explore their artistic creativity beyond the classroom Art experience.

There will be one permission slip for the 2012-2013 school year. Please note, that each month we will rotate between 4th-5th grade students & 3rd grade students, (see below). A maximum of 26 students will be permitted to participate in these activities each month since classroom space is limited. Please return your permission slip as soon as possible to guarantee a spot in class!

If your student is interested in participating in this after school activity, please fill out the permission slip below, enclose the $20 lab fee for the year, and return to Miss Smeltzer by Friday, September 28th.

Please note that Art Adventures is an after-school activity; therefore buses will not be available. If you need to car pool with someone, please name the person(s) at the bottom of the permission slip, (please no more than 2 others).

2. His parents were German immigrants and in the mid1930s his family moved back to Stuttgart, Germany when his mother became homesick.  In 1939, his father was drafted into the German Army and became a prisoner of war until 1947.
3. At age 15 he was drafted by the German government to dig ditches in the Siegfried Line.  When he was able to return to Stuttgart, his home was the only one left with no windows, no doors, or roof.
4. He was always homesick for America and in 1952 he moved to New York City with $40 in his pocket.  He got a job as a graphic designer for promotions at The New York Times.  He was drafted by the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served as a mail clerk stationed in Germany.
5. After returning from service, he worked at the N.Y. Times, at an advertising agency as art director, and later got into writing and illustrating.  His style of art work is created by collage of hand-painted paper.  He currently live between the Florida Keys and North Carolina.


     In support of the PTO, Art students will be taking a short break from their projects this week to create artwork for the district fund-raiser, Art to Remember.  Each student will be creating an artwork to be transferred onto an item for purchase, (ex.: coffee mugs, mouse pad, apron, etc.).
Once their design is complete we will get back into our projects below!

     This week we will review the story called, The Beautiful Oops.  We will learn that Oops can be turned into beautiful works of Art.  Student will get an Oops paper and begin using their imaginations to transform their Oops in Art!

2nd Grade: The Dot Project
     When students come into Art this week, they will be asked to create dots on a piece of paper without many directions.  Students will not learn the outcome of their projects until they hear the story, The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds.  Following the story, students will transform their Dots into Dot Creations.

3rd Grade:  Kaleidoscope Designs
      Students will learn about Kaleidoscopes and how to create a Kaleidoscope Design.  Each student will select a word and put it into a triangular design.  Students will outline their words and begin creating a color pattern to complete their designs.

4th Grade: Cubist Portraits
     We are proudly displaying our Awful Alphabet Creatures at school.  This week we will begin learning about the artist, Pablo Picasso and his style of Cubism.  Students will begin creating their very own Cubist Portraits.  We will focus on organic and geometric shapes to create our portraits.
