Mystery Artist Clues:
1. His drawings are simple like cartoons, they feature recognizable images like a barking dog, a spaceship, a television set, and outlined people and babies.
2. Long before his name became well known, his bold outline drawings on blank poster spaces in New York subways attracted the attention of a variety of people.
3. One of his trademarks is short, choppy lines radiating from figures. This suggests the idea of noise, energy, happiness, and movement.
4. There is no deep meaning in his drawings.  They were supposed to be fun, to give immediate visual pleasure to the people who saw them.  Perhaps this is why very few of his artworks were given titles.

Kindergarten:   Modern Mona Lisa
We are currently learning about portraits, especially the most famous Mona Lisa by Leonardo Di Vinci.  We are drawing our own version of Mona Lisa and creating a modern twist for our backgrounds.

First Grade: Monet Bridges and Action Jackson Paintings
We are studying Claude Monet and his Impressionist style.  We are discussing bridges, architecture, and what goes above and below the bridge.  We will begin with drawing and follow up with painting like an Impressionist. Following Monet Bridges we will learn about the Abstract Expressionist, Jackson Pollock and his wild works!

Second Grade:  Gyotaku Fish Printing
Students will begin learning about the Japanese style of fish printing called Gyotaku.  We will use rubber fish to learn about the printmaking process.

Third Grade: Matisse Goldfish and F.L. Wright Mansions
Students are beginning to learn about the artist, Henri Mattisse and his painting, Goldfish. We will use shapes to create our own interpretation of Goldfish.  We will study warm, cool and neutral colors while painting.  As we paint we will discuss opaque and transparent and its importance in Art. Following Matisse Goldfish we will learn about the architect Frank Lloyd Wright and design our own dream facades.

Fourth Grade: Aboriginal Art and Guatemalan Weaving
We have just begun learning about the Aboriginal Art of Australia.  We are beginning to create mystical creatures.  We are working with symmetry, collage, and contour line.  Eventually our projects will evolve into X-ray or Story Art while we paint in line and dot designs symbolizing the Aboriginal culture.  Following Aboriginal Art project, we will begin learning about the weaving process and create a weaving on a cardboard loom.

Fifth Grade: Keith Haring Symbolism and Surreal Portraits
We will then begin studying the artist, Keith Haring and work with symbolism.  We will practice creating the human form in motion.  We will simplify our drawings into symbolic messages while painting. Once we are done painting we will begin learning about drawing the human face and creating a Surrealist twist into our portraits.
