May 14- Early Dismissal

1st Grade- Vincent van Gogh: We are learning about the artist Vincent van Gogh and his paintings including Starry Night and Sunflowers. We will be combining painting techniques and creating our own Starry Sunflowers.
2nd Grade- Gyotaku Fish Printing: We will begin exploring Japanese Gyotaku Fish Printing. Students will be printing with rubber fish.
3rd Grade- Egyptian Sphinx reliefs: We will begin and continue learning about Egyptian art. Students are learning about Egypt in their classrooms and we are going to carry that on in the Art room too! Students will be using clay to create their own relief of a Sphinx with 'Sphinx on Parade'!
4th Grade- Guatemalan Weaving and Printmaking : Students will continue studying Guatemala and their textile art. Students are warping thier looms and learning the weaving technique of tabby, basket weave, irregular basket weave, pull-ups and soumak. When they are not weaving, students will be learning about the printmaking process.
5th Grade- One point perspective and Plaster Masks: Students will continue learning how to create block letters and the basic elements of one point perspective. We will begin learning about Cultural Masks and the mask making process involving plaster gauze.
***If you have a student that has allergies or might be sensitive to the dust created by the plaster gauze, please let me know and we will find another medium to work with in a different area.

Mask making is a popular art form created by various cultures for many different purposes. Some masks are meant to be worn while others are used for decorative purposes. In some cultures masks are worn for special ceremonies, celebrations and dances. A mask is also used by many cultures to hide the wearer's identity from evil or to scare away ghosts. Other cultures use masks for functional, or useful purposes like firefighters wear masks for oxygen.
Your assignment is to design a mask based on your culture or cultural background. Think about the colors, shaping, and purpose of your mask. Please explain your mask.
