Artist Fun Board
The month of October will be dedicated to Mystery Artist. There are clues and images posted in the art room for students to be detectives and find out! Clues will be posted here soon....
Students have until October 31 to vote.
Clues:
1. Born on December 12, 1863 this Norwegian artist faced many losses throughout his life including the deaths of his mother at age 5, his closest sister when he was 14, his father at age 26, and his younger brother when he was 32.
2. Using art to help him express his feelings, this Modern Expressionist used lines, colors, shapes, and forms to show his innermost feelings of sadness, loneliness, anger, and suffering. Rather than painting what he saw in the world he painted how the world made him feel.
3. On August 22, 2004, two of this artist's works were stolen from an art museum in Norway. One of the works was one of his most famous pieces, The Scream.
Weekly Activities in the Art Room:
Kindergarten- Leaf Rubbings
Once we finish our Oops projects, we will begin talking about texture and creating leaf rubbings. Along with this project we will explore lines and use our hands to create an autumn tree with line branches.

1st Grade- The Scream-What are you scared of?
We will begin learning about the painting, The Scream. Students will begin their project by reviewing the basic form of the body while using shapes to create their own scared face. Will will use his creative images to inspire our backgrounds of what we fear and our facial expressions.
2nd Grade - Prehistoric Art
Once we complete our dot projects, we will begin exploring the beginnings of Art through Prehistoric Rock Art. Students will turn their paper into rocks and create prehistoric images and symbols on our rocks.

3rd Grade Folk Art and Cityscapes
This project is a work in progress for us all. In the past 3rd grade studied Japan and we created Japanese Landscapes to accompany their studies. Currently 3rd grade studies Chicago, Downers Grove and what makes up a Rural, Suburban, and Urban community. Students are beginning to study the different kinds of communities and what identifies a city. We will learn about the artist, Grandma Moses and her Folk Art style of creating moments of her day in rural community. Students will use use charcoal, chalk, collage, and paint to create their own version of an urban landscape.

4th Grade- Picasso Portraits
We will begin learning about the Cubist Artist, Pablo Picasso. We will create our own self portraits using the Cubist style. We will begin with pencil and finish off our creations with oil pastels.

5th Grade- American Gothic Parodies
We will get busy studying the famous painting, American Gothic, by Grant Wood. We will discuss the social aspect of the painting as well as the artistic layering of art elements and principles. Each student will be creating their own parody of American Gothic. Students will be choosing what media works best for their parody.

Please note, that each month we will rotate between 4th-5th grade students & 3rd grade students, (see below). A maximum of 26 students will be permitted to participate in these activities each month since classroom space is limited. Please return your permission slip as soon as possible to guarantee a spot in class!
