Mystery Artist for February:
1. He was born in France on January 19, 1839 to a wealthy banker and his wife. His father strongly encouraged him to become a lawyer even though his dream was to be an artist.
2. In 1862, he left his small town and moved to Paris where he met fellow art students, Claude Monet and Camille Pissaro. They too were eager to try new styles of painting and encouraged this artist to do the same.
3. Although he studied with some of the most famous Impressionist artists, this artist worked hard to show nature in a more solid, permanent way than his Impressionist friends.
4. In his paintings, the background and space around the objects were just as important as his emphasis. Many thought his paintings were flat, but felt it was important to paint his objects to fit on the canvas even if he had to alter their perspective, (point of view).
